BNP wanted to overthrow the government
Awami League (AL) President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated her appeal to the citizens to resist those engaged in arson, terrorism, and killings, emphasising that winning people's hearts is impossible through such destructive acts.
Addressing a discussion meeting at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on the occasion of the Great Victory Day, Sheikh Hasina conveyed that the opposition party, BNP, is not focused on the well-being of the people but aims to establish a regime based on looting. She asserted that BNP avoids elections because they are aware that the public will not vote for individuals associated with arson and killings.
Highlighting the bitter truth, Sheikh Hasina mentioned that BNP and its allies sought to disrupt elections and overthrow the government. She urged the people of Bangladesh to collectively resist criminals, arsonists, killers, and those sabotaging infrastructure, emphasising the importance of putting an end to destructive activities in the country.
She called for citizens to teach lessons to those involved in uprooting rail lines and carrying out arson attacks after apprehending them. Sheikh Hasina emphasized that such destructive actions should not persist in Bangladesh, which, she affirmed, will continue to progress and move forward.
Addressing the ongoing blockade and strike by BNP, Sheikh Hasina stated that these actions have confined the opposition party. She reminded that the Awami League has grown through struggles against adversity and injustice, asserting that the roots of the party run deep and cannot be easily uprooted or suppressed.
Expressing dismay at BNP's engagement in disruptive activities while Bangladesh faces challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war, Sheikh Hasina questioned whether the people of Bangladesh would accept such behaviour. She urged her party leaders and activists to convey the message that Bangladesh will not regress, and its people will march forward victoriously.
Sheikh Hasina highlighted Bangladesh's achievements in establishing voting rights and food security through movements and struggles. She emphasized that Awami League has introduced electoral reforms, ensuring the people's right to vote.
In conclusion, Sheikh Hasina reiterated her confidence that Bangladesh will continue to progress, and its citizens will advance triumphantly. The discussion meeting included remarks from AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, and other party leaders. AL publicity and publication secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap moderated the discussion.
