Report on Eid Travel Situation in Dhaka

Report on Eid Travel Situation in Dhaka

As the Eid holiday approaches, millions of people are returning home from Dhaka, leading to significant congestion on roads, at bus terminals, and waterways. This report provides an overview of the current travel situation in Dhaka, highlighting challenges faced by travelers and measures taken to alleviate congestion and ensure safety during the Eid trip.

Travel Trends

A considerable exodus of city dwellers from Dhaka is observed daily, with Saturday witnessing a surge in the number of people leaving the capital. Despite the high volume of travelers, this year's Eid journey is relatively stress-free compared to previous years. While traffic congestion is prevalent at exit points from Dhaka, the overall journey experiences minimal hardships.

Transportation Modes

Buses, trains, and launches are the primary modes of transportation for Eid travelers. Although congestion is reported at bus terminals such as Mahakhali, Gabtali, and Gulistan's Fulbaria, buses are departing on schedule. However, passengers have raised concerns about overcharging. Trains from Kamalapur railway station are leaving punctually, and special Eid trip trains have been introduced to accommodate the increased demand.

Waterway Travel

While initially, waterway passenger numbers were low, there has been a notable increase in passengers at Sadarghat. Launch owners have responded by increasing the number of launches. However, passengers encountered traffic jams on the road from Gulistan to Sadarghat.

Infrastructure Improvements

Several infrastructure projects have been completed ahead of Eid to improve traffic flow. This includes the opening of railway overpasses, bridges, and the inauguration of toll plazas with Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems. The construction of the Padma Bridge has significantly reduced ferry waiting times at Shimulia ghat.

Safety Measures

To enhance safety during the Eid trip, separate lanes for motorcycles have been designated on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga expressway. Additional police deployment aims to manage traffic effectively. Furthermore, truck traffic will be halted for six days before and after Eid on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

Security Protocols

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued 13 instructions to ensure the safety of residents during the Eid holiday. These include precautions against fire accidents, installation of CCTV cameras, safeguarding valuables, and monitoring suspicious activity.

Despite the challenges posed by the mass exodus of Eid travelers, efforts by authorities to improve infrastructure and implement safety measures have contributed to a relatively smooth travel experience. Continued vigilance and coordination between relevant stakeholders are essential to address any emerging issues and ensure the well-being of travelers during this festive period.
