Patuakhali, May 30, 2024 – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated her government's dedication to the development of Bangladesh and the welfare of its people, particularly in the wake of the recent Cyclone Remal. Addressing a relief distribution program at Government Mojahar Uddin Biswas Degree College in Kolapara, she emphasized the Awami League's continuous support and assistance to the countrymen.

"We are beside you, and we will remain there, providing all kinds of assistance needed," the Prime Minister assured the attendees. She highlighted that the development of the southern region has been possible due to the Awami League's governance, contrasting it with previous administrations that failed to bring significant improvements.

Sheikh Hasina pointed out that maintaining the living standards of the people, even in the face of natural calamities, is a primary goal of her administration. She noted that the tidal waves during this cyclone were much higher than those in previous cyclones, underscoring the severity of the disaster.

The Prime Minister expressed her gratitude to the people for utilizing the cyclone shelters constructed by the government, which undoubtedly saved many lives. She attributed the government's ability to respond effectively to such crises to the continuity of democracy in the country, which she said has facilitated ongoing socioeconomic development.

During the event, Sheikh Hasina distributed relief materials to those affected by Cyclone Remal. She also conducted an aerial survey of the heavily impacted areas of Mathbaria and Pathorghata, observing the devastation firsthand from a helicopter.

The cyclone, which made landfall near Khepupara in Patuakhali with wind speeds reaching 130 km/h, has claimed at least 13 lives, destroyed over 35,000 homes, and affected more than 3.7 million people across 19 districts. In Patuakhali district alone, approximately 327,000 individuals have been affected, with significant damage to homes, agriculture, and fisheries sectors, resulting in losses estimated at over Tk 540 million.

In her speech, Sheikh Hasina highlighted her government's swift response in repairing damaged infrastructure, including roads and dams, and assured that efforts are underway to prevent further flooding before the monsoon. She also promised rehabilitation for those who lost their homes and support for farmers to re-cultivate their crops.

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank the people for their continued support, which she said has enabled the Awami League to serve the nation effectively. She cited several development projects in the region, including the establishment of a cantonment, naval base, Payra Port, and a power plant, as evidence of the progress made under her administration.

Sheikh Hasina concluded by reinforcing her government's commitment to improving the quality of life for all citizens, particularly in disaster-prone areas, and provided directives to divisional officials for ongoing rehabilitation and development work.

The relief distribution event was presided over by Kolapara Awami League Vice President Nirmal Nandi, with State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md. Mohibbur Rahman, Awami League Joint Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, and Organising Secretary Advocate Afzal Hossain also in attendance.
