Stop market manipulation without blaming farmers

Stop market manipulation without blaming farmers

The recent remarks made by State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu regarding the escalating prices of daily commodities in the market have sparked considerable outrage and concern among the populace. Titu's attempt to shift the blame onto farmers for the market instability is not only misguided but also unjust.

In his post-budget press conference, Titu asserted that this year's budget contains nothing to destabilize the market and went on to suggest that farmers are responsible for the soaring prices of essential goods. Such a stance not only displays a lack of understanding of the intricate dynamics of the market but also deflects accountability from the real perpetrators of this crisis.

Titu's argument hinges on the notion that increased production of certain crops leads farmers to sell their produce at higher prices to purchase other essentials such as oil and vegetables. While this may be true to some extent, it fails to acknowledge the broader structural issues at play. The reality is that farmers operate within a system plagued by middlemen and syndicates who manipulate prices to their advantage, often at the expense of both farmers and consumers.

Moreover, Titu's assertion that the prices of oil and sugar have remained balanced since Ramadan overlooks the reality faced by ordinary citizens who struggle to afford these basic necessities on a daily basis. The marginal adjustments in import taxes on paddy and rice mentioned in the budget do little to address the root causes of market instability.

Instead of scapegoating farmers, the government must take concrete steps to tackle the rampant corruption and market manipulation perpetrated by vested interests. Initiatives like the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) providing subsidized products to citizens are commendable but insufficient in the face of entrenched corruption.

The proposal to expand the role of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in providing subsidized products is a welcome step. However, it is not a panacea for the deep-seated issues of corruption and market manipulation. Without meaningful reforms to hold accountable those who exploit the system for personal gain, such measures will be ineffectual at best.

Furthermore, the proposal to establish permanent TCB stores to ensure fair prices for consumers is a step in the right direction. However, unless accompanied by robust measures to hold middlemen and syndicates accountable, such initiatives will fall short of addressing the systemic issues that perpetuate market instability.

In conclusion, it is imperative that the government acknowledges its failure to effectively regulate the market and refrain from unfairly blaming farmers for the consequences of its inaction. Only through genuine reforms and a commitment to combating corruption can we hope to achieve a fair and stable market that serves the interests of all citizens, not just the privileged few.
