Dhaka, June 12, 2024 – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reaffirmed the government's commitment to arresting Tarique Rahman and other convicts involved in the August 21 grenade attack case. Speaking during a question and answer session with Farida Yasmin, a Member of Parliament for the Awami League's reserved women's seat, the Prime Minister detailed ongoing efforts to bring the fugitives to justice.

The Speaker of the National Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, presided over the session.

Prime Minister Hasina stated that 15 convicts, including Tarique Rahman alias Tarique Zia, are currently absconding. She emphasized that the government, in cooperation with international law enforcement agencies, has issued Interpol red notices for several key suspects. Among those sought are Maulana Tajuddin and Harish Chowdhury, who are believed to be hiding abroad.

The Prime Minister recounted the harrowing events of August 21, 2004, when a coordinated grenade attack targeted an Awami League public meeting on Bangabandhu Avenue. This attack, orchestrated by the anti-independence BNP-Jamaat coalition, resulted in numerous casualties. The case, initially filed at Motijheel police station, includes charges under sections 324, 326, 307, 302, and 34 of the Penal Code, along with sections 3 and 4 of the Explosives Act of 1908.

Following a prolonged investigation, the authorities filed two charge sheets implicating 52 individuals in the attack. Notably, three of these accused were executed in connection with other cases before the trial concluded. On October 10, 2018, the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered its verdict, convicting the remaining defendants.

Prime Minister Hasina reiterated her administration's resolve to ensure justice is served, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in tracking and apprehending the fugitives. The government continues to work tirelessly, utilizing all available resources, to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice.
