Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr. Hasan Mahmud recently stated that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) calls for boycotting elections are being largely ignored, even by its leaders and members.

Dr. Mahmud highlighted that numerous BNP leaders actively participated in the elections, with some having established the Trinamool BNP after leaving the original party. He noted that a candidate from the Trinamool BNP is even running in their constituency, as he addressed a meeting in Rangunia municipality.

The meeting saw the participation of various local leaders, including current and former chairmen, union parishad members, and mayors and councillors from the Chattogram-7 constituency.

Dr. Mahmud emphasized the existence of a positive environment conducive to free and fair elections, pointing out the active engagement of a significant number of BNP leaders in the electoral process.

However, he criticized the BNP for resorting to violent tactics such as arson when their calls for election boycotts went unheeded. He condemned a recent arson attack on a moving train in Dhaka by the BNP, which tragically resulted in the deaths of four people, including a mother and her child.

Dr. Mahmud denounced these acts of violence as barbaric and beyond the pale of any legitimate political action. He asserted that such behavior has alienated the BNP from the public, labeling them as enemies of the people engaged in terrorism through arson.

He assured that the government is dedicated to combating these arsonists. The meeting, chaired by Swajan Kumar Talukder, Chairman of the AL's election conducting committee for Chattogram-7, and conducted by committee member Secretary Engineer Shamsul Alam Talukder, also featured speeches from several local AL leaders.
