Younger brother shot dead by elder brother

In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded in Baufal, Patuakhali, a mentally handicapped young man lost his life after being shot by his elder brother. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 10, around 11:30 am, in Suryamoni village of Suryamani union, Upazila.

The victim, Chhotabhai Sabbir Hossain, son of Babul Sardar, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1 am, Monday, March 11. The accused elder brother, Md. Sajib Hossain, a fifth-year student of Nabarun Survey Institute, was subsequently arrested by Baufal police around 2:15 pm on the same day.

According to local sources, the tragic incident transpired as Sajib Hossain was handling an old pistol around the family home. In an unfortunate turn of events, the trigger was pressed accidentally, resulting in a bullet striking Sabbir on the left side of his forehead, just above the eye. Sabbir, being mentally handicapped, was immediately rescued by relatives and rushed to Baufal Health Complex.

Dr. Nurjahan, the attending physician at the health complex's emergency department, reported that Sabbir was in critical condition upon arrival. After administering first aid, he was referred to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. However, upon further examination, doctors discovered the bullet wound, leading to a subsequent referral to Dhaka Neuroscience Hospital and ultimately to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the unfortunate demise occurred.

A relative, speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared these details. Meanwhile, Baufal Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Atiqul Islam confirmed that the incident is under investigation, following orders from the Superintendent of Police. Md. Sajib Hossain has been apprehended and is currently at the police station for questioning.

Preparations are underway to transfer Sabbir's body to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
