Dhaka is empty during Eid holidays

As Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, the streets of Dhaka, the bustling capital of Bangladesh, have emptied as residents embark on a long holiday to celebrate the joyous occasion with their families. With many having already departed for their hometowns, the city's brick-and-stone landscape stands deserted during this festive period.

On the eve of Eid, Wednesday morning witnessed a notable decrease in vehicular traffic across the city, with popular areas like Motijheel, Moghbazar, Mirpur Road, and Dhanmondi notably devoid of their usual hustle and bustle. Foot overbridges, once teeming with pedestrians, now lie nearly vacant, resulting in smoother commutes and minimal traffic congestion. However, the scarcity of vehicles has led to a surge in rickshaw and CNG-powered auto-rickshaw fares, burdening commuters.

Despite the subdued atmosphere, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has implemented an extensive security plan to maintain law and order in the city during the holiday period. Eidgah grounds, markets, banks, and ATM booths have been identified as key areas requiring heightened vigilance, with security arrangements meticulously outlined by the DMP's operations and intelligence departments.

As part of the security measures, law enforcement officers are conducting thorough searches of individuals and their belongings to deter criminal activity. Efforts are also underway to prevent the influx of beggars and hawkers into Eidgah premises and surrounding areas. In the event of an emergency, citizens are urged to contact the police control room or sub-control rooms established within the High Court premises for assistance.

Furthermore, commercial establishments, including gold shops, banks, and ATM booths, will receive enhanced security starting from Eid day to safeguard against potential threats. Police officers deployed to these locations have been briefed on their duties and responsibilities, ensuring a coordinated approach to maintaining public safety.
