Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the President of Awami League (AL), addressed a crucial discussion at the AL office in Tejgaon, shedding light on the distortion of Bangladesh's history following the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975. Her remarks, made on the occasion of the Great Independence Day-2024, highlighted the crucial role played by Bangabandhu in proclaiming independence in 1971 and the subsequent manipulation of historical facts.

Distorted History of Independence

Sheikh Hasina underscored the pivotal moment in Bangladesh's history when Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman proclaimed independence in 1971. She emphasized that the proclamation was disseminated through wireless communication, and Bangabandhu's supporters promptly spread the message across the country. However, she lamented the distortion of this historic event following the assassination of Bangabandhu, suggesting that the true narrative was replaced by a fabricated version.

Questioning Ziaur Rahman's Loyalty

In her address, Prime Minister Hasina raised questions regarding the loyalty of Ziaur Rahman, a controversial figure in Bangladesh's history, during the War of Liberation in 1971. She referenced a letter allegedly written by Mirza Aslam Beg, then an army officer, expressing satisfaction with Ziaur Rahman's activities during the Liberation War. The premier questioned why Ziaur Rahman's family was under the care of Pakistani authorities during the war, hinting at potential ties between Ziaur Rahman and Pakistan.

Mirza Aslam Beg's Involvement

The discussion also brought to light the role of General Mirza Aslam Beg, who served as the Pakistan Army Chief from 1988 to 1991. Prime Minister Hasina highlighted Beg's letter to Ziaur Rahman, suggesting a level of coordination or cooperation between Ziaur Rahman and Pakistani authorities during the Liberation War. Beg's subsequent rise to the position of Pakistan Army Chief following the death of President General Zia-ul-Haq in 1988 adds complexity to the narrative.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's remarks during the discussion at the AL office offer valuable insights into the distortion of Bangladesh's history following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. By questioning Ziaur Rahman's loyalty and highlighting the involvement of General Mirza Aslam Beg, she prompts a critical reevaluation of historical events surrounding Bangladesh's struggle for independence. As Bangladesh commemorates its Great Independence Day in 2024, Sheikh Hasina's reflections serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving the truth and accuracy of historical narratives.
