In a historic victory, Tahseen Bahar Shuchona has been elected as the first female Mayor of Comilla City Corporation, marking a significant milestone in the political landscape of the city. The by-election, which concluded on Saturday, witnessed Tahseen Bahar securing a commanding win over her opponents in a competitive race.

Election Results

Tahseen Bahar, representing the bus symbol, received a total of 48,890 votes across 105 polling centers, decisively outpacing her nearest rival, Monirul Haque Sakku, who garnered 26,897 votes on the clock symbol. Other candidates, Nizam Uddin Kaiser and Nur Ur Rahman Mahmud Tanim, received 13,155 and 5,173 votes for the horse and elephant symbols, respectively.

Voter Participation

The by-election saw a voter turnout of 38.82 percent from a total electorate of 242,458 registered voters. The voting process, which utilized Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for efficiency and transparency, took place smoothly from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with the results being announced shortly after the polls closed by the returning officer, Farhad Hossain.

Background of the New Mayor

Tahseen Bahar Shuchona is currently serving as the organizing secretary of the Comilla Metropolitan Awami League. Her political lineage is notable, with her being the daughter of AKM Bahauddin Bahar MP, who represents Comilla-6 (Adarsh Sadar) in the Parliament. Her victory is seen as a testament to her leadership abilities and her vision for the future of Comilla City.
