Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today honored the memory of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on the occasion of Mujibnagar Day. This historic day marks the formation of Bangladesh's first government, which led the nation's War of Liberation in 1971.

At 7 in the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. In a gesture of deep reverence, she stood in solemn silence to pay homage to the visionary leader who spearheaded Bangladesh's struggle for independence.

Accompanied by senior leaders of the Awami League, of which she is the President, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed another wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu as the party chief. This act symbolized the party's unwavering commitment to Bangabandhu's ideals and the principles of Bangladesh's liberation movement.

Throughout the day, leaders and activists of the Awami League paid their respects by placing wreaths at the graves of Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, and M Mansur Ali at Banani Graveyard. These leaders played pivotal roles in the formation of Bangladesh's first government and the liberation struggle.

The Mujibnagar Day was observed with great enthusiasm and significance by the ruling Awami League and its associate bodies. Various programs were organized to commemorate the historic event, including the hoisting of national and party flags atop all party offices across the country.

Mujibnagar Day commemorates the oath-taking ceremony of Bangladesh's first government on 17 April 1971. In response to the atrocities committed by the Pakistan army during the genocide of unarmed Bengalis on 25 March 1971, senior leaders of the Awami League gathered at Baidyanathtala in Meherpur to form the provisional government of independent Bangladesh.

Under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Syed Nazrul Islam, and Tajuddin Ahmad, among others, Bangladesh's first government provided effective leadership to the War of Liberation, ultimately leading to victory on 16 December 1971.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's tribute on Mujibnagar Day underscores the enduring legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the sacrifices made by the leaders and activists of the liberation movement. The observance of this historic day serves as a reminder of Bangladesh's journey towards independence and the values enshrined in its founding principles.
