Corruption investigation started against Benazir

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of illegal wealth acquisition against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family. This move comes following a series of events including a writ filed in the High Court seeking an inquiry into the corruption allegations against Benazir Ahmed.

Investigation Committee

A three-member committee has been formed under the leadership of Hafizur Rahman, deputy director of the ACC, to investigate the corruption allegations against the former IGP.

Legal Proceedings

A writ was filed in the High Court by Supreme Court lawyer Salahuddin Regan, urging an inquiry into the corruption allegations against Benazir Ahmed. The writ named four individuals including the ACC chairman and secretary as defendants. The High Court may conduct a hearing on this matter on Tuesday, April 23.

Demand for Investigation

Barrister Syed Syedul Haque Sumon wrote a letter to the ACC, demanding an investigation into the corruption allegations against Benazir Ahmed. The letter highlighted concerns regarding the substantial increase in assets acquired by Benazir Ahmed and his family post-retirement, which appears disproportionate to his known income during his 34 years and 7 months of service.

Media Reports

The issue gained significant media attention after a report titled 'Aladdin's lamp in Dhaka's Benazir's house' was published by the daily Kalerkantho on March 31. The report detailed the alleged accumulation of wealth by Benazir Ahmed, including ownership of an elite tourist center, multiple companies, expensive properties, and significant land holdings.

The allegations of corruption against former IGP Benazir Ahmed and the subsequent investigation by the ACC have raised serious concerns regarding accountability and transparency in public service.
