The Government of Bangladesh has officially launched the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Peace Medal, an initiative aimed at recognizing and honoring significant contributions to world peace, human rights, and the alleviation of hunger and poverty. The Cabinet, presided over by the Prime Minister, approved the draft of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Peace Medal Policy-2024 on Monday, May 20, 2024.

Details of the Medal

The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Peace Medal will be awarded every two years to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the aforementioned fields. The key details of the award include:

  1. Frequency: The award will be announced every two years on March 17, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The first award ceremony will take place on May 23, 2025.
  2. Eligibility: Citizens of any country, including Bangladesh, are eligible for the medal. Nominees can include presidents, prime ministers, social workers, politicians, and other distinguished individuals.
  3. Nomination Process: Nobel laureates and heads of embassies located in Bangladesh can propose nominees from their respective countries.
  4. Award Composition: The award consists of a 50-gram gold medal made of 18-carat gold and a financial reward equivalent to 100,000 US dollars.
  5. Jury and Administration: An impartial and international jury board will be constituted to select the award recipients. The Cabinet Department will be responsible for performing the secretarial duties related to the award.
