Investigating the Relationship Between Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Subjective Well-Being in Greece and Cyprus

In a recent study published in Nutrients, researchers delved into the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD), subjective well-being (SWB), and various socioeconomic factors among adults in Greece and Cyprus. The MD, endorsed by UNESCO, promotes plant-based foods and minimal processing and is associated with reduced mortality and lower rates of chronic diseases.

The study employed a cross-sectional design, utilizing online questionnaires that included the 14-item Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) score and validated questions on SWB and emotional states. Ethical approval was obtained, and data collection took place via Google Forms from April 2019 to the end of 2020.

Of the 965 responses collected, 936 were deemed valid. Non-parametric tests revealed significant associations between MD adherence levels and SWB indicators. Demographic analysis showed a predominantly female, educated sample with diverse income levels. Higher MD adherence correlated with more positive SWB outcomes, including increased life satisfaction, happiness, and reduced feelings of worry and depression.

Principal Component Analysis highlighted key factors influencing SWB, with MD adherence showing consistent positive associations. Lifestyle factors like physical activity and non-smoking also correlated with higher SWB scores. These findings underscore the complex interplay of diet, lifestyle, and cultural factors in influencing well-being.

The study provides valuable insights into the relationship between MD adherence and SWB in Greece and Cyprus. It emphasizes the importance of promoting healthy dietary and lifestyle habits for enhancing well-being in Mediterranean populations.

Recommendations

Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of MD adherence on SWB and to develop targeted interventions promoting healthier dietary and lifestyle habits in these regions.
