In the recent 12th parliamentary election, the Awami League (AL) secured 222 out of 298 contested seats, announced Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal at a press conference held at the Election Commission (EC) media centre.

During the briefing, Kazi Habibul Awal stated that the election in Naogaon-2 constituency had been deferred due to the unfortunate demise of a candidate. He also noted that the results for Mymensingh-3 constituency would be declared later, as the voting at one centre there was postponed. The rescheduled poll for this centre is set for January 13.

Following the Awami League, independent candidates emerged as the second most successful group in the January 7 election, clinching 62 seats. The CEC also reported that the Jatiya Party secured 11 seats, while the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bangladesh Workers Party, and Bangladesh Kalyan Party each won a single seat.

Kazi Habibul Awal additionally shared that the national election saw a voter turnout of 41.8 percent. He described the voting process during the 12th Jatiya Sangsad election as comparatively peaceful.
