Bandarban Kidnapped Sonali Bank Manager Rescued

On Thursday, April 4, 2024, the manager of Sonali Bank's Ruma branch in Bandarban, Nizam Uddin, was abducted by an armed separatist group known as the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF). The incident occurred during Taraweeh prayers when the robbers stormed the bank premises, looted Tk 1.5 crore, and abducted Nizam Uddin. Additionally, they seized 14 weapons from the Ansar members who were guarding the bank.

Following the abduction, Nizam Uddin's wife, Nazmul Nahar, revealed to the media that the KNF had demanded Tk 15 lakh as ransom for his release. Nahar, who is a teacher at Bandarban Cantonment Public School and College, shared this information after receiving a phone call from the KNF.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) played a crucial role in rescuing Nizam Uddin from captivity. ASP Imran Khan of RAB headquarters media wing confirmed the successful rescue operation on Thursday. The exact details of the rescue operation were not disclosed.

The incident is part of a series of criminal activities carried out by the separatist group in the Bandarban region. In addition to the abduction and robbery at Sonali Bank's Ruma branch, the KNF also targeted Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila, Bandarban, on Wednesday. These incidents have raised concerns about the security situation in the area.

The abduction and subsequent rescue of Nizam Uddin highlight the challenges posed by armed separatist groups in Bandarban.
