The elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has initiated a 60-day operation against the armed organization Kuki National Front (KNF) following a series of bank robberies in Ruma and Thanchi in Bandarban. The security forces are deploying all tactics, including anti-terrorist operations in the mountains, to address the escalating situation. Local authorities and law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and restore peace in the region.

The KNF, considered a 'separatist organization' by Bangladeshi security forces, has been implicated in recent incidents of armed robbery targeting bank branches and the looting of weapons. These attacks have sparked fear and concern among local residents and authorities.

Incidents and Response

The recent attacks on Sonali Bank in Ruma and Sonali and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi Bazar have prompted swift action from security forces. Local police suspect that the armed terrorists responsible for the attacks may be residing within a short distance from the Thanchi police station itself.

Previous Operations and KNF Activity

In 2022, security forces conducted a coordinated anti-militancy operation in the hilly areas, targeting KNF for allegedly providing armed training to members of Jamaat Ansar Fil Hindil Sharqiya. Despite a lull in KNF activities after this operation, recent events suggest a resurgence.

Assessment of KNF Strength

Security analysts estimate the military wing of KNF to number between 350 to 400 members. The organization, once vocal on social media platforms like Facebook, has demonstrated military training and boasted of a commando team known as the Head Hunter Commando Team. However, their actual operational capacity remains a subject of debate among experts.

Potential Regional Connections

Speculation surrounds KNF's alleged links with groups in Mizoram, India, and Kukis in Myanmar. However, concrete evidence is scarce, and the relationship with groups like the Arakan Army remains contentious due to historical conflicts.

Recent Developments

Following the attacks, hundreds of rounds of gunfire were reported in Alikadam, though authorities later clarified it was not an attack on a checkpoint. However, heightened security measures have been implemented in key areas, including Ruma, Thanchi, and Rowanchari.

Response and Reassurance

The Additional DIG of Chittagong Police, Sanjay Sarkar, visited Thanchi and reassured the public, asserting the police's capability to manage the situation effectively. Meanwhile, the RAB announced a joint operation involving the army, BGB, and police to counter KNF activities.

As the security operation unfolds, it is imperative to address the underlying grievances and dynamics fueling the conflict. Effective dialogue and inclusive peace initiatives may offer a sustainable solution to mitigate tensions and ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in Bandarban and surrounding areas. The success of the operation hinges on collaborative efforts between security forces, local authorities, and community stakeholders to address the root causes of instability and foster lasting peace in the region.
