Border killings: India has not kept its promises

India has not kept its promises

India has not kept its promises

The India-Bangladesh border, once a symbol of unity and cooperation, has now become a site of fear and insecurity for residents living in the border areas of Bangladesh. Despite promises to reduce border killings to zero, the actions of India's Border Security Force (BSF) continue to result in loss of life and heightened tensions along the border.

Background

In recent years, incidents of violence perpetrated by the BSF against Bangladeshi citizens have escalated, with alarming frequency. The use of lethal weapons by the BSF has led to numerous fatalities, including innocent civilians. Despite diplomatic efforts and agreements aimed at addressing this issue, the situation remains dire.

Incidents and Casualties

In 2023 alone, more than 30 Bangladeshi citizens lost their lives at the hands of the BSF, with additional fatalities reported in 2024. Recent incidents in Naogaon and Lalmonirhat have once again highlighted the brutality of the BSF, with three Bangladeshi youths losing their lives in border confrontations. Over the past seven years, the number of casualties has exceeded two hundred, with many more sustaining injuries.

Failure of Diplomatic Efforts

Efforts to address the escalating violence have been hindered by the failure of diplomatic initiatives. Despite agreements such as the 2014 accord aimed at reducing border killings to zero, the situation has only worsened over time. The lack of accountability on the part of the BSF and the Indian government has further exacerbated tensions and eroded trust between the two nations.

Neglect and Injustice

The border between India and Bangladesh is marked by a formidable barbed wire fence, creating barriers to communication and cooperation between border communities. Bangladesh continues to face challenges related to water sharing and trade imbalances, further straining bilateral relations.

Lack of Action

The government of Bangladesh has been criticized for its perceived inability to effectively address the issue of border killings and provide adequate security to its citizens. Despite laws in both countries that prohibit firing on unarmed civilians, such incidents continue to occur with impunity.

The escalating violence along the India-Bangladesh border represents a significant challenge to regional stability and bilateral relations. Urgent action is needed to address the root causes of tension and prevent further loss of life. Both governments must prioritize the protection of civilian lives and work towards sustainable solutions that promote peace and cooperation in the region.
