The Department of Meteorology has issued a heat alert for four divisions of the country, including the capital Dhaka, as intense heat waves sweep across the region. Meteorologist Abdur Rahman warned that the prevailing heatwave in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barisal divisions is expected to intensify over the next 72 hours.

As of Wednesday (April 3), temperatures soared, with the highest recorded at Ishwardi in Pabna reaching 38.5 degrees Celsius by 3 pm. Dhaka experienced a high of 36 degrees Celsius during the same period. Abdur Rahman cautioned that temperatures may rise further in the coming days, posing health risks to the population.

Looking ahead, the long-term forecast for April indicates the likelihood of six heatwaves, with one potentially reaching extreme levels. Temperatures could surpass 42 degrees Celsius, exacerbating the already sweltering conditions.

Authorities are advising residents to take precautionary measures to mitigate the effects of the heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and seeking shelter in cooler environments when necessary. Additionally, vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are urged to take extra care during this period of heightened temperatures.

The government and relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation and have initiated measures to provide relief and support to affected areas. Efforts are underway to disseminate information and raise awareness about heat-related risks and preventive measures across the affected regions.
